Maintenance here is a cleaning schedule, not a coating.
There is no surface film to renew and no resin to protect. What a travertine wall needs is the right cleaner at the right interval.
Cast travertine needs periodic cleaning with a pH-neutral product, more often on an open-pore face than a filled one. It does not need a film-forming sealer. Exterior facades need the joints, baffles and cavity base checked annually, because those, not the panel, are what fail.
| Surface | Routine | Interval | Product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filled interior | Damp wipe | Monthly | pH-neutral detergent |
| Open pore interior | Soft brush, low water | Monthly | pH-neutral, rinse well |
| Bathroom splash zone | Wipe and dry | Weekly | pH-neutral |
| Exterior facade | Wash down | Annual | Mild detergent, low pressure |
| Joints and baffles | Inspect | Annual | Replace missing baffles |
What damages the surface
When a sealer is justified
On an open-pore exterior face in a dirty or coastal environment, a penetrating sealer can slow particulate uptake, at the cost of a reapplication interval. It is a maintenance trade, not a permanent treatment, and it should never be a film.
Questions buyers ask
- Does cast travertine need to be sealed?
- No. The colour is through the body and there is no resin film. A penetrating sealer is optional on open-pore exterior faces; a film-forming sealer should be avoided.
- How often should it be cleaned?
- Monthly wipe or brush indoors, annually on a facade. Bathroom splash zones benefit from weekly drying.
- Can I use a steam cleaner?
- On a filled face, yes at low pressure with immediate drying. On open pore, steam drives moisture into the texture and is best avoided.
