Application
Travertine on a facade is a filling problem, not a stone problem.
Quarried travertine outdoors fails at the fill and at the bedding plane. A cast panel has neither, which is why the material behaves differently above the ground floor.
Cast travertine can be used as an exterior facade panel in a ventilated system. It is UV stable and non-combustible with no resin binder, and at 20 mm it weighs about 42 kg/m², roughly a fifth less than quarried travertine, which reduces the bracket section required.
Why quarried travertine struggles outside
Two mechanisms. First, filled travertine loses its fill: the grout shrinks or washes out and the facade goes patchy. Second, the bedding plane is a weak line, and a panel that was sound in the workshop can delaminate along it after a few winters. Neither is a defect in the stone; both are consequences of using a sedimentary material as a thin cladding.
How the cast panel differs
| Mechanism | Quarried travertine | Cast travertine |
|---|---|---|
| Fill loss | Applied fill can shrink or wash out | Face is filled in the mould; nothing to lose |
| Bedding plane | Weak line along the sediment | Isotropic; no preferred failure plane |
| Frost | Water in open pores can spall the face | Filled face reduces uptake; open pore needs a sheltered detail |
| Weight | ≈ 50 kg/m² at 20 mm | ≈ 42 kg/m² at 20 mm |
The detail that decides durability
A ventilated cavity with baffled joints, a drained base and cavity barriers at floor lines. Water that enters must be able to leave. A sealed-joint facade with a blocked cavity base is the single most common reason an exterior stone facade looks tired after five years, regardless of which stone was used.
Questions buyers ask
- Can travertine look panels be used outside?
- Yes, as a ventilated facade panel. The cast version is UV stable with no resin and no bedding plane, and it should be fixed on brackets with a drained cavity rather than bonded.
- Do exterior panels need sealing?
- No film-forming sealer. The panel is coloured through and has no resin to protect. On an open-pore exterior face, routine cleaning matters more than any coating.
- How does it perform in freeze-thaw?
- A filled face limits water uptake. In severe freeze-thaw the fixing and the joint detail carry more risk than the panel, so both are specified for the site.
