Comparison

Marble is a picture. Travertine is a surface.

Marble is chosen for its movement and its polish. Travertine is chosen for its calm and its grip. Putting the wrong one in a bathroom is the most common mistake in both directions.

Marble has strong directional veining and takes a high polish, which makes it a feature material but slippery when wet. Travertine has fine horizontal banding and a matte, textured surface that grips and hides marks. Marble suits walls and vanities; travertine suits floors, bathrooms and large quiet elevations.

Where marble is the better answer

A reception wall or a vanity where the veining is the subject. Marble rewards a book-matched composition and a polish; travertine has nothing to mirror. If the design intent is a drawing on the wall, marble is the material.

Where travertine is the better answer

Anywhere a person walks, sits or washes. The banding is quiet, the matte surface does not show footprints, and a honed travertine floor is far less slippery than a polished marble one. On a 3.2 m panel the banding also runs continuously, which a veined marble cannot do without a mirrored set.

Questions buyers ask

Is travertine better than marble for a bathroom?
Usually yes: honed travertine grips better and hides water marks. Polished marble on a wet floor is a slip risk, and dark marble shows every mark.
Which is harder?
Cast inorganic travertine is Mohs 6–7. Natural marble is typically Mohs 3–5 because it is calcite. Natural travertine is also calcite-based, around 3–4.
Can the two be combined?
Yes, and it works well if the joint is deliberate: travertine on the floor, marble on the vanity, separated by a shadow gap rather than a butt joint.
