Comparison
Porcelain is denser. Travertine has an edge.
Both are mineral surfaces with a stone look. The choice usually comes down to what happens at the corner.
Porcelain is denser and more stain resistant, and is available thinner. Cast travertine is thicker, lighter per square metre than natural stone, can be cast curved and can have its edge and rebate formed in the mould. Porcelain wins on flat walls with tight budgets; cast wins where the detail is exposed.
| Cast travertine | Porcelain | |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 20 / 25 / 30 mm | 6–20 mm |
| Density | 2.1 g/cm³ | ≈ 2.3–2.4 g/cm³ |
| Edge | Formed: rebate, return, radius | Cut; arris chips |
| Curvature | Cast to radius | Flat |
| Stain | Good on filled face | Very high |
| Thermal | Cementitious movement | Low expansion |
| Repair | Replaceable, matches by mould | Replace panel |
Where porcelain is simply better
A flat wall, a tight budget, tight joints and a specification that does not care about the edge. Porcelain is also the more forgiving surface in a commercial kitchen or a laboratory bench.
Where the edge decides
Every opening, every column, every change of plane exposes an edge. A fired slab has to be cut, and the cut arris is the most chip-prone part of the product. A cast panel arrives with that edge moulded, including a return that turns the corner without a visible cut.
Questions buyers ask
- Is porcelain better than travertine for a bathroom?
- For sheer stain resistance, yes. For the texture and the formed edge around a niche or a bench, cast travertine reads better and performs well in the filled face.
- Which is lighter?
- A 6 mm porcelain slab is much lighter than a 20 mm cast panel. At 20 mm they are close. The fixing system for each has to be included before the comparison means anything.
- Can they be combined?
- Yes, commonly: porcelain on the floor, cast travertine on the wall. Detail the junction with a shadow gap so the change of thickness reads as intentional.
