A fireplace surround is a fire-rated assembly, not a decoration.
Resin-bound stone-look panels are combustible. Putting one next to a heat source is a specification error that a Class A panel avoids.
Cast inorganic travertine is Class A non-combustible to GB 8624, so it can be used as a fireplace surround. It does not burn or drip, though like any cementitious material it can spall under sustained direct flame, so the design still keeps a clearance to the firebox and follows the appliance manufacturer.
What the panel does under heat
A cementitious panel does not ignite, melt or drip. Under sustained high temperature it dehydrates and can spall at the surface. That matters for a solid-fuel appliance where the surround is close to the firebox; for a gas fire with a lined box it is not usually the governing case.

Why resin composites are the wrong choice here
A resin-bound flexible stone is a combustible material with a plastic binder. Near a heat source it can soften, discolour and, in a fire, contribute fuel. The fire class of the panel is the first question to ask, before colour or pattern.

Questions buyers ask
- Is travertine safe around a fireplace?
- Cast inorganic travertine is non-combustible and does not burn. Clearances to the appliance still govern, and a solid-fuel stove needs more distance than a lined gas fire.
- Can the panel crack from heat?
- Thermal movement is real, so the surround is detailed with joints rather than fixed rigidly at every edge. Spalling can occur with direct flame on a cementitious surface.
- Can I use a flexible stone veneer instead?
- It is lighter and easier to wrap, but it is resin-bound and combustible. Around a heat source that is the wrong trade-off.
